Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Musical Started As A "Joke" That Created An "Unbreakable" Bond Within The Cast (2024)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Celia Rose Gooding looks back on how Star Trek's first-ever musical started off as a "joke" that brought the cast closer together. Directed by Dermot Downs and written by Kathryn Lyn and Bill Wolkoff, Strange New Worlds' musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody", was a smash with critics and audiences. "Subspace Rhapsody's" soundtrack of songs written and composed by Tom Polce and Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo even topped the Apple streaming music charts.

The Wrap's How I Did It interviewed Kay Hanley, Tom Polce, and Celia Rose Gooding about how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode came to be. Gooding admitted she was nervous when she realized the Star Trek musical would be a real thing, and she discussed how the experience of singing together created a "pretty unbreakable bond" within the cast. When I first heard about the musical episode, it started off as a joke. I thought it would be cool in theory – we have a lot of musical people, myself and Chrissy (Christina Chong) who plays La’an… Then, when I found out it was going to be an actual thing, it wasn’t just a joke anymore, I got really nervous.

I feel like there’s something intimate and special about singing in harmony with someone else. It just creates a bond that is pretty unbreakable. So the fact we got this moment together as a cast/family, we’re bonded in a way that I don’t know if many other Trek families are, truthfully.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Cast Will Keep Singing Together

Boldly singing together in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode turned out not to be a one-time thing for Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melisaa Navia, and Jess Bush. The Star Trek quartet collaborated on a new song together called "Space Girlz", which is waiting to be released. Chong, Bush, Navia, and Gooding worked with award-winning producer Jim Anderson in Toronto to produce the new track while they were filming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

There is even talk about bringing Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical to Broadway, although that may just be a fanciful dream at this point. Then again, so was the very concept of a Star Trek musical to begin with, and that became not just a reality, but a hit. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' cast definitely has musical talent they want to continue pursuing. It remains to be seen if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical will ever have an encore, but there are always possibilities.
