here. if we can get it just a bit bigger, there is a two car crash after treasure island blocking the left lane, and it's causing more congestion than normal. just know that there is stop and go traffic from west grand avenue back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. fighting the homeless crisis is a key goal in most of our bay area cities. in san jose last night, the city council passed a budget in hopes of seeing immediate change. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joining us live in studio. and, gloria, how is the money going to help get people off the streets? >> good morning kumasi. despite a tough fiscal year, the san jose city council unanimously passed a multibillion dollar budget 120 million of the $5.3 billion budget is earmarked for homeless solutions. mayor matt mehan is calling it the most significant and strategic investment in addressing unsheltered homelessness in the history of the city. now, as part of last night's vote, the council also approved shifting more than $20 million in measure e funds. funds from the property tax transfer tax were slated to be for affordable housing. some

will now go to more immediate solutions, such as complying with the san francisco bay regional water quality control board by clearing homeless encampments near its waterways by june of 2025, or facing hefty fines. >> we have a pathway now to being in compliance with with our stormwater permit and the clean water act, but to do that, we have to follow through on the investments we've outlined in this budget. >> over the next year, it's estimated 1200 people will be moved off the streets and into alternate live sleeping sites, 600 into temporary shelter, 500 a new safe sleeping sites and 110 new safe parking spots. homeless advocates tell us they are not a fan of congregate shelters, but they would like to see more transitional housing options live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news thank you, gloria. >> oakland police have made several arrests in connection with a series of illegal sideshows. all of them happened

over the weekend. since then, police say they've arrested five people, recovered three firearms and towed three vehicles. authorities believe around 300 vehicles and 200 spectators engaged in the activity. investigators are identifying other cars that were involved and may track those vehicles to the homes they're registered to, and told them people living in a group of rvs parked on one san francisco street could be forced to leave as soon as next month. >> the city is planning a new four hour parking limit on winston drive near lake merced, which is pretty close to stonestown galleria. more than a dozen rvs are parked there. as you can see, a group of people who live in their vehicles now calling in the city to help them find a new place to park. >> we're here because we don't have anywhere else to go. we don't have a safe parking site. we don't have stability. why do you guys want to kick us out when we're not harming anyone? >> we are not like criminals or something like that. we are humans. we're like all people, but different lives. >> sfmta says they're working to

find safe parking resources for people who live there. residents say they haven't been offered any better alternatives, and some say they'll stay when the parking enforcement starts. >> the plan to bring a new city to solano county, taking a key step forward, elections officials have announced that the california forever project has qualified for the november ballot. so next, the solano county board of supervisors will decide whether to order a report on the impacts of the project before placing it on the ballot. the next meeting is june 25th. california forever is aiming to bring a city of as many as 400,000 people to that area between fairfield and rio vista. >> if you're interested in the future of san francisco's powell street today is your chance to see what that future could hold. the union square alliance is holding an open house for the powell street improvement project. if you're watching us. yesterday we told you about the plans. these designs call for refreshed sidewalks and upgraded parklets, but the biggest idea

school shooting are graduating from high school. they were in first grade when the shooting happened in 2012. amanda, they are eagerly awaiting the next chapter of their lives. yeah, reggie. >> six students spoke with abc's george stephanopoulos before their graduation today. sandy hook is one of the deadliest school shootings in u.s. history. where 21st graders and six educators died. >> you have this connection that's never going to go away, but it's still even you know, over ten years later, just so difficult to try and dig up those memories because of how traumatic and painful it is. >> now, as they prepare to graduate high school, these young people say they will continue to advocate for change when it comes to gun laws. as

parklets and the parked cars into the street, with cyclists going between those places and the curb. now the center lane bike, the center bike lane opened ten months ago. a lot of businesses blamed the project for a drop in business because it removed some parking spots. we talked with one business owner who wants to see bike lanes run through neighborhoods, not commercial corridors. >> north beach clement, the marina they're all thriving and none of them have a bike lane. we have a bike lane. and the month that the construction started made valencia street die . >> the earliest sfmta could potentially start this process would be the beginning of next year. happening today san jose taco bell workers are heating up the picket lines. workers at the location on south king road will strike to protest against the excessive heat and labor law violations. some staff complained that kitchen temperatures have risen to nearly 90 degrees due to the

are planning a trip to wine country this week. mulple agencies will be conducting prescribed burns near lake sonoma. crews say today's burn will involve about 70 acres of grass, and on friday, they'll be burning around 288 acres near half a canoe trail. now, officials say all the prescribed burns will depend on the weather and the quality of the air. pope francis, accused of repeating a gay slur in a closed door meeting at the vatican. the pope initially used an italian word that is an offensive slur for gay people in a meeting last month, one bishop said the pope may not have realized that the word is offensive. then it happened again yesterday as he met with roman priests. the vatican's press office said in yesterday's meeting, the pope reiterated the need to welcome

raised concerns over the vetting process for migrants. after analyzing asylum applications over a six year period up until last year, he concluded the technology, procedures and coordination were not fully effective when screening non-citizens and some asylum seekers. but other homeland security experts say it's possible federal authorities let them into the country to help lead law enforcement to a bigger threat. >> we may have not immediately scooped them up because we wanted to see who they were affiliated with, sources say. >> there is not enough evidence for terrorism charges, but all eight men are likely to be deported back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. we've been following the story about elizabeth holmes, her attorney in court in san francisco, for an appeals hearing yesterday. holmes was not in court. she was convicted in 2022 on four felony counts of defrauding investors in theranos for now defunct

blood testing startup. she's currently serving 11 years in prison. her attorney claims the trial judge improperly allowed a former theranos science to testify about how poorly the company's blood testing technology performed. one of the three appeals court judges said a ruling would be issued in due course, but didn't provide a certain timeline. it could take anywhere from a few weeks to more than a year before a ruling. >> new at six san francisco is reportedly unprepared when it comes to easing rising sea levels, which could lead to catastrophic flooding. this is video showing flooding after an intense storm in the city earlier this year. the city's civil grand jury released a report detailing how an increase in atmospheric rivers, combined with the city's vulnerable infrastructure, could overwhelm low lying neighborhoods that includes soma, the mission district civic center and the western addition. the report also highlights poor communication across city departments that will severely affect those areas. our media

partner, the sf standard, reports the city leaders have two months to publish a formal response to this report. >> someone in the south bay apparently getting ready to pay big bucks for a condemned home. the home, listed for nearly $700,000, isn elliott street in the burnk district of santa clara county, surrounded by san jose. it has seven bedrooms, but nobody's allowed to live in the home, the realtor listing. it says the county found a number of code violations and has since put up a condemned sign. there's a current offer pending, though whoever buys it has a lengthy repair job ahead of them. we spoke with one woman who bought a condemned home and renovate it. she bought it from out of state. eventually, she had to just tear it down and rebuild. >> basically, had people come in and throw everything away, paint everything, and turned it into a canvas. and then i cleaned it up and actually looked kind of cute for two years. but we did eventually knock it down. >> the realtor says whoever buys

in custody after police say a man a bus during rush hour in atlanta. passengers aboard the bus reported a gunman on the bus holding them hostage yesterday afternoon. when officers got there, that suspect ordered the bus driver to start driving, which then led to a police chase. that bus hit several cars as the driver tried to maneuver through heavy traffic. police finally used a spike strip in the chase. >> a gunman with a gun to the head of a bus driver saying, don't stop this bus or else worse will happen. this is the type of thing that obviously no one is. i mean, it seems like the movies officers took a 39 year old convicted felon with 19 prior arrests into custody. >> he allegedly shot one of the passengers, who later died at the hospital. no one was. no one else was hurt. >> across the country, communities are dealing with a

better bay area breakthrough. >> we're taking a look at the new expansion project of oakland's children's hospital. we were on hand to hear about the key agreement ensuring that local workers are being employed for the job. the $1.6 billion project will modernize the hospital's campus, while the main building on mlk and 52nd will stay several older buildings behind it will be replaced, and those date back to the 1920s. the emergency department will double in size. that's key because this hospital is the only level one pediatric trauma center in the region, so be seven stories uh. >> it will also include a new neonatal intensive care unit, two new medical surgical units, and inpatient psychiatric unit, which will be the first in the region for kids here in the bay area. >> the trade agreement ensures at least 30% of the workforce is alameda and contra costa county based. these upgrades are set to be done by 2030. >> now it's your morning money report. we're following two big financial headlines that could

embarcadero. a light breeze as some of the flags wave atop of the pier. here's a look at the accuweather headlines today. it is much cooler. highs are closer to average. just want to give you a heads up for father's day. we're going to have some gusty winds on sunday 25 to 50mph. but it's only a one day affair. winds calm down on monday and speaking of the extended outlook, lots of sunshine and mild temperatures are in our future. today though, we get a break from the intense heat of yesterday inland. we'll stay in the 80s and low 90s for the most part around the bay shoreline. it is mild, just not as warm as yesterday. 60s and 70s by the afternoon and along the coast a mix of sun and clouds. and we'll stay in the 50s. so highs today in our microclimate starting in the south bay. yesterday we were in the 90s in san jose. today will be in the 80s. so it feels a bit more comfortable along the peninsula. 70 for san mateo, but 78 redwood city. the same in los altos. 50s for the coast. a mix of sun and clouds today across the city yesterday we were in the 70s. today will be in the low and mid 60s in the north

the good news is traffic is improving. this is after a two car crash that was blocking two left lanes after treasure island. that crash has cleared in the last 30 minutes, but we are still dealing with major residual delays. i want to get you over to the eastshore freeway here. uh- the delays on the east shore freeway are from albany that exit and then at the tolls. the 8-80 approach is backed up from the diamond split. the 580 approach is backed up to highway 24. and from here know that it will take you one hour and 13 minutes from highway four to get into the city. i had a few people write in about what that sign says right there. it's just alerting drivers about bridge work today that's supposed to be beginning at 1 p.m. nothing to do with this slowdown. now but again, it's improving. still, give yourself plenty of time if you rely on the bay bridge into the city. thank you for the warning, amanda. >> the contra costa county fire protection district says it's prepared for fire. season it up staffed in april, hiring 32 new hand crew specialists and two
