I love this homemade version of Dole Whip. It tastes very much like the ones I’ve had at Disneyland. I also think it tastes better than the ones now available at the grocery store. It is also super easy to make.

Ingredients

  • Frozen pineapple
  • Vanilla coconut ice cream

Frozen pineapple: This recipe works best with frozen pineapple chunks. The pineapples are blended until they become creamy.

Vanilla coconut ice cream: To make the frozen treat extra creamy and taste more like ice cream, we use vanilla flavored dairy-free coconut ice cream. The Dole Whip sold at Disneyland is dairy-free which is why we are using coconut ice cream. But you can also use regular vanilla ice cream if you don’t need it to be dairy-free. You do want to make sure to use vanilla flavored to make it taste like traditional Dole Whip.

How to make Homemade Dole Whip

  • The frozen pineapples are blended in a food processor until the mixture becomes creamy. We use a similar technique to make 1 ingredient orange sorbet and 2 ingredient lemon sorbet. The key is to blend the fruit while it is still frozen. It will initially be crumbly but then will turn creamy.
  • One the pineapples turn creamy, add in the vanilla coconut ice cream until you have a smooth and creamy mixture. It is best to consume right away instead of trying to freeze it. The blending in the food processor helps make it airy and light, like soft serve. If you put it in the freezer, then it will become more heavy and dense. If you work fast enough, you can even pipe it into bowls so that it has the signature swirl.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (272 g) frozen pineapple chunks
  • 2 cups (309 g) vanilla flavored dairy-free coconut ice cream can also use regular vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  • Add frozen pineapple chunks to a large food processor and blend until creamy, scraping down the sides a few times to help the processor blend. At first it will look crumbly, but the more it blends it will slowly turn into a sorbet consistency.

  • Once the mixture looks creamy, add in the frozen vanilla ice cream. Blend until smooth, creamy and uniform in color. Serve right away. You can scoop or pipe it into bowls.

Notes

  • You can store leftovers in the freezer however freezing it will make the mixture more icy and dense. For serving leftovers, I recommend letting the frozen dessert soften a few minutes at room temperature. You don't want it fully soft, but if you apply light pressure to the surface, it should not be completely solid. Then add it to a food processor and blend until creamy before serving. Blending it again whips air into it and makes it light and creamy again.
  • Make sure to use vanilla flavored ice cream. There is vanilla flavoring in the original so using vanilla flavored ice cream really helps it taste like the ones served at Disney. We used vanilla flavored dairy-free coconut ice cream because the one served at Disney is dairy-free. Using just regular coconut ice cream without vanilla flavor will make the coconut flavor too strong and it won't taste as much like Dole Whip.
  • I used So Delicious Vanilla Bean Dairy Free Coconut Ice Cream.
  • If you want to pipe the Dole Whip you do need to work quickly. Add the mixture to a piping bag and pipe with a large open star tip. I used Ateco #828* with a .63 inch opening.

  • I also recommend wearing gloves when piping because it is very cold.
  • This recipe yields a little over 3 cups of homemade Dole Whip.
